So I'm almost to 200 followers and I think it's time for a celebration. When I hit 200 I'll be giving away some original artwork! So let's hope I hit 200 and when/if I do stay tooned because shortly after that i'll have a little give away.

This guy was for a class assignment for Erik Martin's digital painting class. We were supposed to use a textures to design and paint a creature for a live action feature film. This is not even close to being in my comfort zone but i'm pretty happy with it. There are some glaring issues that i'm just now seeing but ah well. I'll fix it later.

Well, the good news is, i'm finally able to fully support myself as an artist! The bad news is I'm swamped! (I guess that's also good news) But i haven't had time to draw for myself lately.

Here is an old page of shark designs i did a few months back I have some notes my buddy Brett Bean gave me that i need to go back and incoporate but other than that i was pretty happy with the way these came out.

So i went to unemployed and twiddling my thumbs to pull my hair out busy in approximately 3 days. That explains the lack of posts lately.

Before i got busy I spent a couple of days hanging out in downtown LA sketching all day. Here are some of the results.

Ok i don't know how many of you guys pay attention to the sidebar on this blog, but you should. Among all the amazing artists i have linked over there is Kevin Nelson's blog. Probably my one of my favorite artists at the moment. His use of color and composition is phenomenal as well as being a brilliant technical draughtsman. Every post is different and amazing. Please do yourself a favor and check it out!

Free Comicbook Day 2011!!!

So, this Saturday May 7th is Free Comic Book Day and I will be at Earth-2 Comics with my bud Todd "Brocasso" Harris doing free sketches for anyone and everyone who wants one. I'm still not sure on the time but i will post it as soon as i find out! If you want a free sketch, some free comics, or you just want to hang out, make sure to stop by!

I've been training by having my Girlfriend call out random superheroes to me and time how long it takes me to finish a peice. This is a small sampling of some of the ones i've completed We are at about 10-15 minutes right now. I'm very impressed and proud of her depth of knowledge when it comes to superheroes and villains so far. These are actually some of the more well known ones she has asked for.

Well i have been entirely frustrated with my work lately so i stayed up late last night and tried to work through it. I haven't drawn with the ol' blue col-erase for a while and i was pretty pleased that i got five decent ones out. These are in no way great but I think i may be forcing myself out of this slump. Sometimes i feel right before i'm about to hit a new level in my art I have to break through a 4ft thick steel wall. Hopefully that's problem.

I've always been a fan of the Martian Manhunter's alien form. So i decided to do a more "traditional" design based on that. More of a classical looking alien with the big round head. Let me know what you think

Super hero costume designer. Man if that was a real job I would be all over it! These are some pretty rough colors just to get the ideas down. They are all supposed to be the same hero if you couldn't tell.

I got a lot of inspiration from Cory Walker. His supergirl costume designs are amazing! and he is just amazing all together. Take a look if you're not familiar with his work.

So I decided to try my hand at some compostion, environmental design, and digital painting all in fell swoop. I'm pretty happy with the way these came out seeing as how i did them all in one night and this was my first real go at it.

"Framed Ink" by the amazing Marcos Mateu was a huge help. I would highly recommend buying this book. If you click the title in this post it will take you to the Amazon page. AWESOME!

Progress!

Well I have officially burned through another Moleskin sketchbook. And as i was going to post the last page in my latest book i found my first moleskin and thought you might want to see the progress I have made.

The top image is the first page in my first book when i decided to start taking location sketching seriously and realized what it had to offer. This was a little shy of a year ago when i started. The bottom image is literally the last page in my latest sketchbook which I just finished last week.

I can see a world of difference. In the beginning it was all about speed and making the drawing look like the person. Now Im more focused on volume, tone, color and trying to push my designs. Not only has it helped my technical and fundamental drawing but i have increased in speed and it really gives you a chance to explore and be creative.

So if you haven't tried it, I would highly recommend it. And if any of you ever want to get together and sketch let me know. I'm always down!

Off to the stress and fear of starting a new sketchbook! This one is blue by the way and not a moleskin so it might suck.

Some development sketches for a character named Moose for an IP I have floating around in my head. I really wanted to explore multiple versions of this character from reptilian to cat like and some variations in between. I usually don't explore this much but i wanted to push myself in all directions and feel like I was successful. The only bad part is I don't know which one i like better. Oh well. I will post the progress to come! in the meantime let me know what you think!

Oh yeah these were done using a blue ball point pen and Copic grays. The orange was done in post using photoshop. Having a lot of fun with gray markers btw.

Moleksin Sketch Dump

Almost through another Moleskin! This ugly, little, red, Moleskin hardcover has been one of my favorite sketchbooks for some reason. I have really used this book to try and push my characters and myself out of my comfort zone. I have succeeded sometimes and failed probably most but the journey continues as it always does!

I'm becoming more and more a fan of the Clone Wars series. It started off a little slow for me but has definitely picked up. The one thing i was drawn to from day one is Ahsoka and her fighting style. I dug how they made a conscious decision to give her her own way of fighting.

100 Followers!!!

Well I want to thank everyone who stops by my blog as I have finally reached 100 followers. I started this blog quite a while ago and have grown TREMENDOUSLY since. What keeps me wanting to post and striving to do better is everyone who comes by and leaves encouraging words and constructive critiques. So thank you again for all your support. I hope that VERY soon someone will finally give me that break i've been looking for and all this hard work will pay off.

As for this guy, he actually started off as a warm up sketch and I kept noodling away at him and played with some markers and i think he actually came out pretty awesome. So as always let me know what you think!

Anyway i was inspired and this started off as a head sketch and i just kept going with it. Just finished my first moleskin and the majority of it is actually filled with location sketching. I'm going to be posting a few select pages here and there. The top page is the earliest of these three. Probably done a month or two ago. The middle page was probably done about a week ago. This last page was done a few days ago. Just wanted to show some of the other crap that comes out of my head.

I never put too much stock in location sketching but now that i have been doing a lot of it i have realized how much it helps. I'm a lot faster and more confident with my lines. It also helps tremendously in building up your visual vocabulary. I guess everyone was right after all. Let me know what you think!

I've been doing some life drawing on Tuesday nights over at the Art Director's Guild office in Studio City. It's only 10 bucks for three hours and it's right by my place. Here are a few selections from the past couple of sessions. I apologize for the poor quality i took them with my iPhone as they are too large to scan.

The bottom image came from a model who came in character as a Mad Max style character. So i used my Costume Gesture drawing skills that i learned from Mark Mcdonnell to embelish the picture. Let me know what you think!

Second this is a memory sketch from lunch today. Did this in about 10 minutes as i am about to go to dinner. I saw him walking on my way back to the office. Playing with tones in Sketchbook pro is awesome. Let me know what you guys think.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It's also a great way to learn from one of the greatest most influential illustrators who ever lived.

Frank Frazetta passed away last week and when I heard this i grabbed my favorite book of his, "Rough Work" which is a compilation of all his rough sketches, water colors, and sketchbook doodles. This image is taken from my favorite peice in the book which i included in the bottom. I find loosely translating another artists drawing is a great way to learn how they deal with a lot of problems.

Frank Frazetta is a huge inspiration to probably just about anyone who has picked up a pen, pencil, or paint brush to try and capture the fantastic or any subject for that matter. He was a true master and he will be missed.

A while back everyone was posting pics of Goku. I was going to but never really made it past this point. I was going to add the energy ball when i colored it but this sketch just kind of got lost in the shuffle.

The last of the superhero line up. She has telekinetic powers. I am going to go in and add an effect on her forehead to illustrate that better. Let me know what you think.

Ok so i missed yesterday. BUT i have two drawings to post so we will just pretend that didn't happen.

Well i mentioned the chick below this post could summon demons so this is the demon she summons. They are BFF and fight side by side. Let me know what you think.
